Petone's First 100 Years (1940)

Foreword by
G. London, Esq.
Mayor Of Petone.
This Souvenir, which has been produced by the untiring efforts of public-spirited citizens, aided by the generous donations of the business firms of our town will prove, I hope, of interest to young and old alike, as a survey of the progress of Petone during the past 50 years.
Much information has had to be omitted, owing to cost, but I hope that during our week's Jubilee Celebrations, the exchange of old memories will remedy the defect. Ex-residents of Petone will be proud to know that with our excellent recreational facilities, we are still able to produce champions in sport equal to those who made Petone famous in the past.
I feel sure that those who are returning to Petone after a period, must be impressed with the advancement that has been made. To-day, Petone is a town of very considerable industrial importance, and as a Council, we sense our responsibility in making every reasonable provision for its ultimate development as the chief industrial centre of New Zealand.
To those Mayors, Councillors, and Public Citizens of the past who have been responsible for the amazing progress of our town, I should like to pay my tribute, as well as to Mr. W. B. Nicholson and Mr. L. T. Watkins for the very able manner in which they have carried out their respective parts, in editing and publishing this fine souvenir.
