Petone's First 100 Years (1940)

Industrial Progress.

As an industrial centre Petone is one of the most important in the Dominion and is rapidly expanding. The following large industries have been established for many years:—
Gear Meat Company Ltd.
Wellington Woollen Company, Ltd.
General Motors N.Z. Ltd.
W. D. & H. O. Wills (N.Z.) Ltd.
Lever Bros. (N.Z.) Ltd.
Todd Motor Industries Ltd.
New Zealand Motor Bodies Ltd.
Dominion Dye Works. C. & A. Odlin Ltd.
William Cook & Sons
—and numerous smaller concerns.
New industries recently opened include the G. N. Raymond Proprietary Ltd., Palmolive Colgate Coy., Carbonic Ice Company and J. Gadsden & Co. Ltd.
The removal of the Railway Workshops to Woburn, Lower Hutt, some years ago was a set-back to the western end of the town that is now being overcome by the new industries opening up in that area. The future of the Borough would appear to be mainly industrial and as it is not possible to spread, on account of the whole area being covered, the only alternative will be to build upwards.
There is also an increasing number of flats being built in consequence.
