Among the many old established New Zealand Companies operating in Petone, must be included the well known McKenzie Department Stores.
Recognising for some years the wonderful progress being made in Petone and it's potential value as a commercial centre combined with the phenomenal expansion of both the town and residential areas, the company decided to acquire the freehold of property suitable for the erection of a McKenzie Store in Jackson Street. Whilst it was not until the middle of 1936 that such a property was available, a building programme was put in hand without delay and, on 6th October of the same year, a new McKenzie Store—modern in every respect—was opened to the public of Petone and has since become a main shopping centre of the town.
Although the association of the McKenzie Stores with Petone has extended over a period of only four years, the company's name has been a household one in the Petone area for many years, and the familiar phrase "Get it at McKenzies" dates back some twenty-five years when the first McKenzie Store was opened in Wellington.
An entirely New Zealand concern, McKenzies have branches in thirty- three localities throughout the Dominion. The Company's Head Offices being in Wellington, where the now familiar McKenzie Head Office Building occupies in Upper Willis Street a prominent position among the City's buildings.
The founder and Principal of the business is Mr. J. R. McKenzie, well known both in business and sporting circles and whose home is at "Roydon Lodge," Yaldhurst, Christchurch.
