Self Government in Petone.
Some Historical Jottings.
Petone's first attempt at self-government was in 1840, when the first settlers under the New Zealand Land Company set up a committee to preserve order and to organize the infant community.
After the decision to migrate to Wellington was made, the only authority for some years was the Provincial Government.
Petone then came under the jurisdiction of the Hutt County Council, though the Hutt Road appears for some time to have been under the jurisdiction of the Wellington Highways Board.
